How Pet Insurance Quotes Are Configured
Every pet insurance policy has four core settings that determine how it actually behaves when you use it:
Reimbursement Rate |
The percentage of a covered vet bill the insurer pays out after your deductible is met (usually 70%, 80%, or 90%) |
|---|---|
Deductible |
What you pay out of pocket before reimbursement kicks in |
Annual Limit |
The maximum amount a policy will pay out in a year (common levels: $5,000, $10,000, or unlimited) |
Exam Fees |
Whether or not veterinary exam fees are included or excluded from the base plan. |
When we show you quotes from different insurers, we configure these four settings as closely as possible so you're comparing similar levels of coverage, not just similar price tags.
Example:
Setting |
Insurer A |
Insurer B |
|---|---|---|

Sometimes an insurer simply doesn't offer a matching configuration. In the example above, they may only offer unlimited annual coverage with no $10,000 option. When that happens, we default to the option that favors you. In this case, unlimited. Then, we offset it by adjusting the deductible slightly upward. The policies aren't identical, but the overall level of coverage stays comparable.
We do the same with endorsements, optional add-ons, or exclusions like exam-fee coverage, setting them the same way across insurers wherever the option exists, so no single quote looks artificially cheaper by leaving something out.
For the accident-and-illness conditions that make up the majority of real claims — an upset stomach, a UTI, vomiting — coverage works similarly across nearly every plan on the market today. Most plans cover the same core accidents and illnesses. But some insurers differ in dental coverage, whether and when a curable pre-existing condition becomes eligible, and waiting periods for orthopedic conditions. We standardize the deductible, reimbursement, and annual limit so prices are comparable.
Why this matters:
Not every pet insurance comparison tool sets these three settings the same way from insurer to insurer, so it's worth double-checking them no matter where you're shopping — a lower price doesn't always mean less coverage, but it doesn't always mean the same coverage either. We handle that comparison for you automatically, every time.

How We Set Coverage Tiers
To make it easier to understand your options at a glance, we group quotes into four conceptual coverage tiers:

As with any quote, not every insurer offers the exact configuration shown for a tier. When that happens, we substitute the closest match using the same approach explained above, so you’re still comparing plans at roughly the same coverage level. These tiers are a general coverage ladder to help you understand, at a glance, how moving up generally means more coverage (and a higher premium) and moving down means a lower premium in exchange for less coverage. There's no universally "best" tier, only the one that fits your pet, your budget, and how much risk you're comfortable taking on.
Behind the Results
How Pet Insurance Ranking Works on Our Site
When you submit your information through our form, we pull live quotes from our insurer partners and rank them using three factors:
Customer Reviews
Insurers with stronger customer satisfaction move higher in your results
Price
For a comparable level of coverage, lower-priced quotes move higher
Likelihood to Purchase
How likely pet parents, in general, are to purchase and keep a given insurer's plans
Together, these are meant to answer one question: which plan is this pet parent most likely to be happy with and keep long-term? Quotes that combine strong reviews and competitive pricing typically rise to the top; quotes from lower-rated insurers or with unusually high prices for the coverage offered typically appear further down.
You'll see the top result marked as our Recommended Plan, with the next two options labeled Great Alternatives.
Reviews You Can Trust
Where Our Reviews Come From
We aggregate ratings and reviews from several trusted, independent sources, including:
- Trustpilot
- Apple App Store
- Google Play Store
- ConsumerAffairs
- Reviews submitted directly on PetInsuranceQuotes.com
We also factor in app store ratings, since so many pet parents use their insurer’s app to file claims, track reimbursements, and contact support. This way, you’re seeing a well-rounded view of each insurer’s reputation.
Yes, We’re Free to Use
How We Stay Free for Pet Parents
Pet Insurance Quotes is a licensed insurance agency, operating as an independent insurance brokerage. That means we work a bit differently than some referral and lead-generation-based comparison sites out there. Instead of a flat fee for sending you to an insurer, we’re focused on making sure you’re actually happy with your policy. It will never cost you anything extra to use our site, and the price that you see on our site is the same as what you’ll see on the insurer’s site.
Our Partners
We currently partner with 10+ leading pet insurance companies.
How We're Paid
When you buy a policy through us, the insurer pays us a commission over the life of that policy. That's a standard, revenue-share arrangement used across the insurance industry, and it's never passed on to you. The price you see is the price you pay, whether you buy through us or go straight to the insurer.
We only get paid if you keep your policy. If you buy a plan and cancel it right away, the insurer usually loses money (and so do we). That gives us a real incentive to match you with a plan you'll actually want to stick with.
We also show information on insurers we don't formally partner with, so you get a fuller picture of what's out there, not just a list of the ones we work with.
Actual Pricing, Not Estimates
Real-Time Quotes and Prices
The prices you see aren't estimates or numbers pulled from a static database. When you fill out the form, we ping our insurer partners' systems in real time and show you the actual price you'd pay. Pricing varies based on your pet's breed, age, and location, but for the same inputs, it's the same price you'd get going directly to the insurer’s site.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Will I still get sign-up perks, like a gift card, if I buy through you instead of going straight to the insurer?
Generally, yes. Insurance is a regulated industry, and most states have anti-kickback laws that require pricing and promotions to stay consistent no matter how you get to an insurer. So if an insurer is running a sign-up incentive, you'd typically still get it whether you buy through Pet Insurance Quotes or directly on their site.
-
What happens if an insurer doesn't offer the same deductible or annual limit as the others I'm comparing?
We default to whichever option favors you and adjust another setting slightly to compensate — for example, bumping an insurer up to unlimited annual coverage instead of a $10,000 cap, then nudging their deductible up a bit. The result isn't an identical policy, but it keeps the overall coverage level comparable so the price differences you see are meaningful. Once you click through to an insurer’s site, you can still customize your policy however you like before you buy.
-
Is this just affiliate marketing?
No. We’re a licensed pet insurance marketplace, not an affiliate or lead-generation site. That means we’re not paid a flat fee just for sending you to an insurer. We earn an ongoing commission tied to your satisfaction with your policy.
-
What if an insurer I’m interested in isn’t listed in my search results?
We still show information on pet insurance companies we don’t formally partner with, too, so you’re seeing a fuller picture of all the options available to you.
-
What do “Recommended Plan” and “Great Alternatives” mean?
Your Recommended Plan is the quote our three ranking factors (customer reviews, price, and likelihood to purchase) placed at the top of your results for the coverage level you’re comparing. Great Alternatives are the next two closest matches. All three are configured as closely as possible in deductible, reimbursement rate, and annual limit, so the difference usually comes down to the ranking factors mentioned above.
-
Does the apples-to-apples comparison cover dental, breed-specific conditions, and curable pre-existing conditions the same way?
Mostly, but not entirely. For the coverage that makes up most accident and illness claims, plans are comparable across insurers. Dental coverage, breed-specific conditions, how curable pre-existing conditions are defined and handled, and orthopedic waiting periods vary more from insurer to insurer and aren’t standardized in the same way that we standardized the deductible, reimbursement rate, and annual limit. That said, if any of these matter for your pet, it’s worth closely reviewing an insurer’s specific policy before enrolling.
-
What about optional add-ons, like exam fee coverage?
Some insurers let you add optional coverage for things like exam fees as a toggle you can turn on or off. Others build it into their standard plan with no separate add-on option. Wherever an insurer offers an exam fee add-on, we set it the same way across insurers so no plan looks cheaper just because an add-on wasn’t toggled on.
